English/Language Arts (ELA)

Language Arts has its own instructional period, as grammar study and writing demand specific instruction. Students complete regular writing and analysis assignments and learn the different stages of the writing process. Grammar is explicitly taught and practiced through online practice and frequent assignments. 

Writing Study:

  • The writing process
  • Narrative, expository, persuasive, and descriptive writing
  • Letter writing
  • Research
  • Daughters of the American Revolution Essay Contest (8th grade only)

Grammar Study

  • Strong emphasis on grammar and mechanics to foster clear and correct writing. 
  • Online resources for practicing grammar and composition. 

Special Projects:

  • Pen Pals (letter writing)
  • Create Menus (descriptive writing)
  • Create Commercials (persuasive writing)
  • Museum Project ( expository writing)
  • Create and Explain Kachina (explanatory & Social Studies)

Reading & Vocabulary

Both on-level and accelerated reading provide in-depth instruction and study in text, literary devices, figures of speech, novels, vocabulary, and literature. The accelerated classes read additional material and move at a faster pace; however, both classes offer challenging assignments and expose students to appropriate literature and robust discussion.
