4th Grade

Fourth-grade teachers emphasize refinement and application of more independent study skills to encourage more independent learning. Students navigate the higher expectations of responsibility, conduct, and self-sufficiency under the guidance of nurturing, structured teachers. Our approach to education continues to be:
  • Developing the whole child in character, faith, leadership, and service;
  • Emphasizing life skills, executive functioning, and personal responsibility; and
  • Cultivating the joy of learning and meeting challenges.
In 4th grade, we continue to differentiate assignments within the classroom and design collaborative projects. Students are assessed three times a year through iReady and aimswebPlus, and the Cognitive Abilities Test (CoGat) every spring. Results are used internally to inform instructions and flexible group placement and data for the Middle School honors class consideration. In addition, we accommodate diverse learning styles and honor IEPs, 504 plans, and special needs.

4th Grade Saint Biographies

Our 4th Grade students choose a Saint to research and present to their class every year.

4th Grade Curriculum Summary

Religion: In addition to following the liturgical year, fourth-grade students continue Sacrament preparation by studying the Ten Commandments and the Rosary, including a project in which students make their own Rosary and the Beatitudes.

Classes require four-yearly Mass Reflections.

Textbooks: Alive in Christ
Social-Emotional Learning: Led by our Social Worker, students will be focusing on the theme RESPECT: Respect & Responsibility, Empathy, Self-Control/Sincerity/Service, Patience, Equity vs. Equality/Ethics, Character/Compassion, and Trust.
Language Arts & Reading: We utilize the integrated Wonders program, which includes phonics, rich literature, guided reading, spelling, and writing activities. The reading anthology offers complex text that emphasizes new skills.

Leveled texts provide students with the opportunity to read at their individual instructional levels, ensuring that we meet the needs of all students. The classroom teacher meets with individuals in leveled groups and differentiated readers.

Fourth graders learn vocabulary and literacy skills to build a background in other domain subjects, which facilitates transitioning from “learning to read,” to “reading to learn.” Students use their close reading skills to decipher complex text selections. They focus on developing the 5-step writing process for paragraph composition, applying rules in projects across the written curriculum. Teachers encourage public speaking projects.

Textbooks: Wonders, Wonders Reading Anthology, Wonders Reading/Writing Workshop, Word Wisdom
Mathematics:The 4th grade math program utilizes a variety of teaching tools such as direct instruction, individual and partner-oriented work, cooperative groups, and special projects. Teachers level students in a flexible group.

SOSM will supplement targeted instruction with iReady.

Science: Fourth graders engage in four units of in-depth study: Rocks and Minerals (Earth Science), Microworlds (Life Science), Electric Circuits (Physical Science), and Energy Works (Physical Science). Students observe, reflect on, and participate in inquiry-based activities based on the Amplify Science curriculum in adherence to the Next Generation Science Standards.

Textbooks: Amplify Science
