Music

Music education benefits students and positively impacts their academic performance. As part of our whole child development, School of St. Mary's students have musical opportunities and education in all grades. In music classes, students learn age-appropriate vocal techniques, music notation, and musical instruments.

Music at the UGC

Our music curriculum addresses a variety of aspects but centers on the following three:

  • Basic music reading via solfege in the Kodaly methodology
  • Skills that enable active participation in music-making in worship settings
  • An understanding of how musical selections fit into history and geography.

Musical skill development (like mathematics) relies on a carefully sequenced order of presentation and frequent practice opportunities.

Students can dig deeper into vocal skill development through participation in choir.

In addition to the music curriculum, students in grades 4 through 8 have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument through our Band Program. The band is run through Music Education Services and requires a separate registration form and fees. Please see the Student Activities section to register.
