Music

Music education benefits students and positively impacts their academic performance. As part of our whole child development, School of St. Mary's students have musical opportunities and education in all grades. In music classes, students learn age-appropriate vocal techniques, music notation, and musical instruments.

Music and Drama at the UGC

At SOSM, music and drama are intertwined to provide our middle school students a wide-ranging experience in the performing arts. UGC students receive instruction in proper vocal technique and basic music theory while singing a variety of choral music repertoire and learning simple dance choreography.

In addition, students practice building ensemble by collaborating in creative dramatics activities like role-playing, improvisation, and puppetry. Finally, our students learn to express themselves with confidence through performance opportunities each semester, culminating in the annual Broadway-style production by 8th grade students in the spring.

For students interested in ways to serve, the UGC choir meets weekly during Monday lunch to prepare worship music for Tuesday Mass. These students also spread Christmas cheer to nursing home residents and guild members during the holiday season!

In addition to the music curriculum, students in grades 4 through 8 have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument through our Band Program. The band is run through Music Education Services and requires a separate registration form and fees. Please see the Student Activities section to register.
