Summer Reading Lists & Math Review Packets

Pack these books for your vacation and keep your children reading all summer long! Students should complete their grades assigned reading, and activities. Fall activities and assignments will be planned around this reading for the first week of school. In addition, each grade has a math review packet that should also be completed by the first day of school. Please contact your teacher with any questions. 

Kindergarten Summer Packet

Incoming kindergartners should read Mother Goose Favorites by Tomie de Paola and draw a picture of their favorite nursery rhyme to bring on the first day of school. Click here for the Kindergarten assignment.

Sixth Grade Summer Packet

All incoming 6th grade students should complete this math review packet before the first day of school. 
This summer, to maintain and enhance their literacy skills your son or daughter should select a book from the list below to read:

  • Bridge Over Terabithia – by Katherine Paterson
    This is a story about Jess Aarons and Leslie Burke, two fifth-graders who become friends and create an imaginary world called Terabithia, which is inhabited by all manner of magical creatures and where they can go to forget your problems. Though difficulties fill their ordinary lives, Jesse and Leslie rule as king and queen in Terabithia. Soon, one of the friends must draw on the strength of their imaginary kingdom to cope with a tragedy.
  • The Crossover – by Kwame Alexander
    Josh Bell is almost 13 years old, and basketball is his life. His identical twin brother, Jordan, whose nickname is JB, is his best friend and co-star on the court. Life as an almost teenager isn’t easy, especially when your brother gets a girlfriend, and your father is having health problems. Basketball, however, solves everything and makes everything better. Until it doesn’t. The Crossover is a heartwarming story written entirely in poems that will capture children's and adults' hearts.
  • Moon over Manifest – by Clare Vanderpool 
    The story follows a twelve-year-old girl, Abilene, who is sent by her laborer father to spend the summer of 1936 in the town of Manifest, Kansas. In the house of the pastor who takes her in, Abilene finds a hidden box of documents that leads her to a mystery about the history of the town.
  • Old Yeller – by Fred Gipson
    Old Yeller is a classic historical fiction novel about the bond between a boy and his dog. With his Papa away on a cattle drive, 14-year-old Travis Coates gets help from a brave stray dog. Together, they defend the homestead and protect Travis's mother and little brother. 

Seventh Grade Summer Packet

All incoming 7th grade students should complete a math packet (below) for their level. 

7th grade students should choose one of the following books to read:

  • The Adventures of Tom Sawyer 
    The story is set in the fictional town of St. Petersburg, Missouri, and follows the adventures of a young boy named Tom Sawyer who is known for his mischievous and adventurous nature. The novel explores his various escapades, including treasure hunts, whitewashing a fence, and witnessing a murder. 
  • Savvy 
    This is a story about a girl named Mibs who is turning thirteen and, in her family, means turning into a teenager means that she will receive her special ability called a Savvy. It's a great novel filled with many fun adventures. In the story Savvy, where Mibs lives between Nebraska and Kansas, it is obvious that she is no ordinary girl. It is a touching tale of a special girl’s journey to find her place in the world, along with a band of misfits she never thought would stand by her side. 
  • Shiloh 
    The story is about Marty Preston, a boy who finds and falls in love with a dog. He names the young beagle Shiloh. He does everything he can to keep it, but Shiloh belongs to his neighbor, Judd, a mean man who breaks rules and treats animals badly. 
  • The Headless Cupid 
    The Stanleys' old house has an alleged past history of being inhabited by a destructive poltergeist, who caused rocks to fly through the house and beheaded a wooden cupid that is carved into the stairs. When David's father is away, the poltergeist suddenly becomes active and again begins to wreak havoc in the house.
