Adventures in Science
Hands-on science experiments in chemistry, physical science, engineering, and rocketry are taught in this popular after school activity.Ambassadors
Select seventh and eighth grade students serve as Ambassadors representing the school in various school-sponsored events, tours, open houses, etc.Art in the Afternoon
Art in the Afternoon is an after-school program for fourth grade through sixth grade on Tuesdays until 4:30 p.m. All types of media are explored to create memorable projects and enhance creativity.Chess-Ed
Chess teaches a skill that can be applied to many other aspects of life. It teaches one to plan carefully in advance, to visualize various situations before making a move, and the importance of patience. Numerous studies have proven that kids obtain a higher reading level, math level and a greater learning ability. Chess is available first through eighth grades, meeting prior to classes one morning per week. Children are invited to participate in tournaments in both the spring and the fall.Choir
Students in grades fourth through eighth sing at school liturgies, parish holiday masses, and secular functions. A good ear, desire to sing, and regular commitment to rehearsal attendance are the only requirements for participation.Extended Day
Early childhood students may attend the Extended Day program in the morning from 7:30 to 8:50 a.m.and/or in the afternoon from 3:10 to 5:30 p.m.Math Club
Math Club is open to grades fourth through sixth grade. This group focuses on learning the basic concepts and having fun with math games. This is a non-competitive club. The group meets at the Upper Grade Center every Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. from October through April.Math Counts
Math Counts is a nationwide coaching competition program for middle school students. The session begins in mid September and ends in mid April. The group meets at the Upper Grade Center every Tuesday from 8:00 to 8:45 a.m.National Junior Honor Society
Seventh and eighth graders are eligible. Membership into this society is by invitation. The criteria considered are scholarship (93% grade average required), service (10 hours are required at the School of St. Mary), leadership, citizenship, and character. Students are notified of their eligibility and can begin their required service in the summers leading up to seventh and eighth grades. Induction takes place at Honors Night in May.North Shore Service Learning Consortium
The North Shore Service Learning Consortium is an alliance of schools whose purpose is to work together on developing service and community programs to enhance the students’ academic learning experiences. Participants attend meetings on leadership and service learning and serve as steering committee members to educate and guide the school's student body on developing and implementing a yearly service project.Scholastic Bowl
This activity sharpens knowledge in many subjects - similar to Jeopardy, but done with teams. Available to Upper Grade Center students, the team meets once per week prior to class in the morning.Spelling Bee
The Spelling Bee is held yearly during Catholic Schools Week in January. Two winners from each home room are selected in each grade levels four through eight.Student Council
Student Council members are elected by their peers to serve designated terms. Student Council sponsors two dances each year, one which is the Father/Daughter Dance in February. Popular fundraising activities including pop sales and holiday grams are also held.Talent Show
The Talent Show is a student-run production held in the spring. Student acts are selected and there are opportunities to gain production/stage-hand experience. Committees include program, scenery, lighting, costuming, and sound.
